What would a FR mark on the butt of a 1943 Savage refer to? I believe FR marked on the receiver is an Ishaphore rework mark, but find no reference to FR stamped on the butt. This Enfield is all Savage marked and has no India service marking (or screw).

Thank you,

As far as I know, the jury's still out on that. Some say it's a British mark for "Field Repair" rather than a full FTR, others insist it's Indian, the same as the "FR" found on the buttsocket of Ishapore reworked rifles.

Personally, I don't believe it's Indian, for the simple reason that the Indians have marked rework on the L/H side of the buttsocket since at least early WWI (the MkI** IP's being a good example). Others, more learned and/or intelligent than I, may very well disagree.

My Stevens No4 Mk1* also has the same "FR" stamped on the butt. It's in excellent shape with all parts Stevens marked. I've been wondering about it too.
