The receiver/action body should be held firm, but the barrel should be free to move up inside the forend/hand guards at the front by about 1/8" inch. The barrel free-floats for most of its length, but presses down on the end of the forend with about 6-7 lb force. This give the barrel a damping effect, and is how the bedding was designed.

+1. Contrary to rumour, the No.4 was NOT designed with a free-floating barrel. The trick is adjusting the bedding to get the correct amount of pressure. As I consider "woodwork" to be chopping logs, I have left several of my Enfields alone in this respect to avoid destruction.;)
