I'm almost committed to buying a S&W 586 DCM with 6" barrel for $660 with box and papers (incl. shipping). Looks nice but I see some for less. Not being familiar with the different versions (e.g. dash), I am a bit leery of being "had".. any thoughts on this one....? Thanks, Dan

My sense is that is on the high end, but not by much for a ANIB example with papers and tools. It seems to me that enough guys started collecting 586's and 581's that the prices climbed significantly over the past 3 years. IIRC the first one, the no dash, had a recall and refitted ones are indicated with an "M" stamp. I will try to dig out the SCSW tonight and post back with more specifics.

Added - produced 1980 - 1999, it looks like the -6 engineering change was the last.

My brother in law has the 686 in mint condition and he had to send it in for the recall. This wasway back when you could send it by UPS without having an FFL. One day in winter he went around to the front door and found a buried package. It seems that UPS had dropped off the revolver over a week earlier and just left it outside, lol.

S&W 586 with 6" barrel does not disappoint

Thanks guys. I went ahead and bought it. It's a beauty to hold and shoot. The Distinguished Combat Magnum has classic wood grips and blueing. It is a hefty revolver that soaks up the stoutest 357 magnum recoil with ease (although Buffalo Bore 158 grain loaded to max SAAMI specs did sting a bit :)).

Here are some pics for you S&W aficionados and you S&W newbies like me. It's a first series (no-dash) 586 model with adjustable sights manufactured between 1980 and 1990. For more information on these fine revolvers, see:

Beautiful gun. Don't really know if the price was high or not but I can see why you purchased it. Were your shots at a rest or off hand? Good grouping.

Thanks for the compliments. Shots were double-action offhand at 10 yards, by my son. :)

You did well. I really like the mid-frame size from S&W. The 686 that my father and I shared is one of my favorite guns along with the Ruger GP100 we shot together as our last shots with each other before he died.

Thanks Michael. Nice memory of your father. I look forward to passing my guns to my sons in the future as well. For now, I'm enjoying sharing my passion with them. Best, Dan

PS: I'm looking to buy at Model 12 in 38 special. Any opinions about that model?
