Romanian VZ 24 Crest / Serial Number Survey Thread

If you have a VZ 24 with a two letter prefix AR, BR, CR....YR and so on.... please consider contributing to this survey, no matter the rifle's condition!

I've started, as a pet project of mine, to try and dig up as best a survey of Romanian contract VZ-24 serial numbers as possible, with the hopes of determining some sort of trends in production. In starting this, I wanted to differentiate between reported SN/crests and actual photos, so I've included the following categories in my survey: Serial Number, Crest Type, hyperlink to source, info visible in photos, sidewall manufacturer name, and "notes". I've done a bit of digging online to locate photos of other's rifles with this information and have a decent amount of rifles, but more would absolutely help fill in gaps and maybe allow folks to draw some conclusions on production. At the very least it may be interesting for folks with scrubbed guns to know what their rifle may have been produced with. I'm aware of some of the earlier surveys, but haven't included that information in this chart, at least yet, just because I want to be able to see photos or at least evidence of these rifles before going to older surveys for info, mostly to avoid any potential errors in that data collection. If you have a VZ 24 with a two letter prefix AR, BR, CR....YR and so on.... please condier adding it to this list!

Please feel free to post information on any rifles not included in this survey in this thread. Please include: A link to photos or photos uploaded to this thread, the Serial number, and the sidewall manufacturer as it's marked.

Also please feel free to make assumptions, challenge my assumptions, or make any corrections to my info as it's presented. I will continue to update this post with relevant information periodically.

Some key information to note:
  1. King Carol II became king in 1930
  2. Germany invaded Czechoslovakia in March 1939 (the portion where Brno was located)
  3. Ion Antonescu took control of the Romanian Government on 9/5/1940
  4. King Michael assumed the role of King on 9/6/1940
  5. King Michael led a coup in August of 1944 to regain control of the Government
Looking at initial information here, as of 12/9/2020, I am making the following assumptions, which could be totally incorrect:
  • AR1387 through BR9133 are all marked with a "1939" on the receiver
  • CR15844 through GR24464 are marked with a King Carol crest
  • OR 5138 to OR 9079 is around when King Carol was overthrown
  • OR 9079 through RR 4724 are mostly marked with a "1940" on the receiver as King Michael took over ask "king"
  • PR 7867 through PR 14484 are leftover King Carol receivers, presumably shipped to meet needs irrelevant of their former markings?
  • RR 524 through RR 4724 are 1940 crests, presumably because a new King Michael crest isn't ready for production yet?
  • RR 12444 through TR 62XX are King Carol crests, presumably remaining recievers from earlier in production?
  • TR11755 through end of production is (presumably) King Michael
  • The highest serial number I've seen is YR 23860 and it was scrubbed of its crest
Again, as of 12/9/2020, To add more confusion to the mix:
  • AR through HR 2969 prefixes the reciever is marked "Ceskoslovenska Zbrojovka A.S. Brno"
  • HR 24458 to OR 5138 are marked "ZBROJOVKA BRNO A.S."
  • OR 9079 through OR 24916 is again marked "Ceskoslovenska Zbrojovka A.S. Brno" and are all "1940" crests
  • PR prefixes are marked "ZBROJOVKA BRNO A.S." and are all either scrubbed or Carol crests
  • RR524 through RR12444 are "Ceskoslovenska Zbrojovka A.S. Brno"
  • RR21023 through YR and end of production are "ZBROJOVKA BRNO A.S."
One last random assumption that I want to make is that virtually none of the 1939 and 1940 crests were obliterated during their post war refurbishment by Romanian Communists as they seem fairly common and most in their ranges are not scrubbed.

I've tried to pull that information into the chart below and it seems to correspond well with some of the discrepancies in features seen on some of these rifles. Some of the mystery might be solved. Serial: YR490
Mfg: Zbrojovka Brno, A.S.
Matching stock, but bolt is serialized RR19186.
Crest is either completely scrubbed or never existed; the metal is completely smooth.
Finish is almost non-existent but the rifle is perfectly functional.

I have AR 7610 that is scrubbed and looks to have hints of the King Carol crest. That would suggest that not all AR block are 1939 dated. For the most part it seems the year dated receivers didn't get scrubbed.

I have two VZ 24s serial no. SR 7554 with German modified stock. Rear side swivel removed and hole filled with a dowel, still retains Czech stock disc and lower band with side swivel. Retainer for k98k style sling has been added. Stock serial number SR 6466, ZBROJOVKA BRNO, A.S. VZ24 on side rail. Bolt serial number 1279 with circle Z on safety lever. Crest scrubbed. TR 5998 with matching stock. Bolt serial number XR 16620. Crest

My VZ 24 sniper..has SN not type seen in the listing...can anyone help me with Info. on this rifle ? it is a Century import marked one bought mid 1990s

Rifles included in this post are Romanian Contract rifles. I have a VZ 24 with a serial number similar to yours, it's 6320 G3. I believe the E Lion number above the serial number
is an inspection mark. Mine is E Lion 35 which I think means it was accepted by the Czech
army in 1935.

I'd encourage you to post on the thread I'll link to below. You'll likely find much more helpful information in that thread. This doesn't really fit the theme of this thread. I started this thread to try and gather info on Romanian contract VZ 24 rifles (those having a two letter prefix with an "R" as the second letter). This rifle appears to be a Czech military sniper rifle, but I'm not very familiar with VZ24 snipers. Very cool rifle though! I'd love to have one myself.

Just an observation regarding inspection markings and serial styles. It appears that rifles in the AR and BR series were completed at CZ Bystrica, indicated by the E4Lion39 from AR2222 and the serial font. E4 was the VTLU code assigned to Bystrica, while Brno was assigned E3. It appears that a version of the CM stamp was adopted sometime in the BR-series of rifles. However, it does appear that the CR-series rifles were completed at Brno. How do I draw this conclusion? The serial number font and side rail changed. Small things like the accent above the C is different on the AR and BR rifles compared to the CR. Furthermore, the Slovak Republic declared independence in March of 1939, which likely caused CZ Bystrica to become a "foreign entity" to Brno.

The following is speculation: CZ Bystrica probably postponed or paused the Romanian contract to focus on producing rifles for domestic use as Hungary was posturing to invade, which they did. Romania, being upset that there was now a disruption in the contract, likely demanded CZ Brno pick up where CZ Bystrica left off, which they did. Again, this is speculation, but I feel is somewhat accurate and would explain a production shift from Bystrica to Brno.

According to the records from ZB (not CZ), production was shared between Brno and Považská Bystrica. See the chart on Post #651 on this thread: Mausers, Only Mausers
That chart shows the proposed schedule of production and shipment which may have diverged due to unexpected circumstances from warfare, etc.

The two ZB plants remained under the same company after Slovakia became separate. However, both eventually became part of the conglomerate Reichswerke Herman Goering for the duration of the war.

ČZ (Česká zbrojovka) is a different manufacturer than ZB (Zbrojovka Brno) - ZB was also known pre-war as ČSZ (Československá zbrojovka). ZB made these rifles, not CZ
