Romanian SKS's are "sleepers" in terms of price. There are not that many nice "like new" or matchings ones around.

Great find and deal. What is the date for your rifle? Very nice grain structure in the stock of your rifle.

Sorry norm, but you just killed the collector value of your rifle by "cleaning" your stock. Sanding as you did changes your rifle from it's as issued condition to Owner modified. AKA BUBBA gun...... Removing dirt and grease with a rag and mineral spirits is one thing, sanding and finnish removal is another.

hopefully he just stripped it, and he's going to make it look like new military issue. until he whips out the polyurethane and scope mounts, it's not quite Bubba.

SOG has Romanian SKS's for sale

I was talking to salesman at SOG today about trying to find some original Romanian Cleaning kits and accessories (ammo pouches), as I was misssing these item for my two rifles in the collection. I know that SOG sold these rifles back in 2001 and later, but I had been told that there were all imported that were avialable a few years back by a friend of mine in the import business. I was quite surprised to hear that they (SOG) had gotten a shippment of these rifle in recently in good to verygood condition at $169.00 each. I plan on calling back on Monday and checking to make sure the salesman wasen't talking about Yugo's by mistake. I will let you know what I find out on Monday.

The stock looks great and very clean sanded...some red mohagany and finsih would look fantastic. I refinished mine as well, and I love it. I dont care about collecting too much, im much more of a shooter.

thanks for defining my right to do want I want to my own property

after I wiped the stock and forearm down I notice the stock and the forearm had cracks in them the only way I know how to glue a stock is by getting all the oil out of them and after I whip down the stock I could see the ser.# on the stock didn't match close ,but no cigar

I striped it not sanded

After staining with Chromium Trioxide , light sanding 320 grit, 0000 steel wool and raw dark Tung oil mix with BLO
this is way it looks after one coat

Sorry, Norm If you believe I was defining your right to do anything to your rifle. I am not.

I am however, also free to express my opinion as to what you did to the collector value of your rifle. This forum is a collectors forum and you have every right to post as I do. There are other Boards in this forum which deal with This type of topic. Most Posters here are concerned with keeping their arms as close to stock as possible and not modifying them from their as issued state.

I seriously hope Norm stays and post more of his collection. What I said was not meant to "run him off". It was only meant to educate. Either original or refinished his rifle is very nice. One of the main purposes of these boards IMHO is to try and keep as many of these rifles as original as possible.

We all at times (me included) need a little education. Like I said in my first post I thought his rifles wood had great character. Maybe if he stays he too will develop a greater appreciation of these Military weapons in their original and sometimes flawed but original condition.

Many of my rifles have some flaws. I keep them as original as possible and try to limit further damage by giving them routine cleaning and oiling.

So Norm I'm sorry if I insulted you. My comments were not meant as such.

JIMMY C

that's all right I'm thick skinned or thick headed ( don't know witch may be both ) (LOL)

if I posted a pix of a SKS with a plastic stock , or a 20 round mag , or a cut off bayonet lug on it ,to me that's bubba'd

but all I did was take an unmatched cracked stock and making it worth more than I paid for it , want I could have done is re stamp the stock refinished and aged the stock and nobody could tell but the difference but me ( I will not do that )

sorry if I offend any one

( question ) dose anybody know if the gas tube's were ser# mine is not I think it's been replaced because the Handguard Ferrule pin I could hand push it out

third coat the forearm or hand guard is almost done

Collector value is reduced to zip with the stock refinish job. This is not my opinion but a fact. I'm sure it will be a good shooter but it's a shame it had to be a Romanian as they are fairly uncommon. If I was going to modify an SKS, I'd find a used Chinese one to do it to.
