Just head about this rifle and I'm looking into purchasing one. But I couldn't find anything online about its history. All I got is that the Romanian Army used them as a training rifle. Does anyone have anything more?

Arisaka_99_NY: I've been trying to find the exact same info on Google with no reliable results.

The buddy who sold me his M-69 last week, was lucky to have escaped East Germany a few years before the Iron Curtain came down.
This guy wasn't sure that the rifles were used by any WARSAW PACT forces. The safety, bolt cut-out and sight hoods remind me of Mauser K-98s.

As there were many Romanian soldiers who fought alongside the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front in WW2, there appear to be some military connections to the K-98, don't you suppose?

Ive used mine as a Meat maker/Fur rifle for 10 years + here in the Arctic. Gotta absolutly LOVE the sights, with the rear a solid chunk of unbreakable steel, with 2 leafs that fold and are dead on the money with Remington Thunderbolts and Winchester 40 grn.
Somehoe, Ive managed to keep the original clip, and with an AK-74 cleaning kit in the buttstock + a pull through string, is an awsome rifle for extended year round hunting trips ina boat, snowmachine and in my hand. Maby this very M-69 has brought the big lights off for far more individual animals than my Mosins all combined have.....Multipull Caribou at a go in the river, smack to the back of the head, My sons tapping Seals with brain shots, and not haveing the seal 'pushed' down with a heavy impact, small game is something to hunt in numbers, as well as down'd waterfowl and snuffing Fur in traps. Its a much favored and looked after traveling companion....

Buy it, shoot it, enjoy that .22 for life!

Funny foot note on the above post, as I have met folks from the former Soviet empire,, east Germany, Czechloslovokia, Poland, Latvia, and none of them EVER said "Migrated", "Moved", "Came over" They ALL said "When I Esacaped".......didnt hit me till maybe the 3 or 4th person who said such, but that word describes alot......

I bought one for my son in the early 90's when he was about 6 for $70. A little beat up but very accurate, and an excellent rifle to train anyone at any age. Action and barrel were excellent and remain the same after 1000's of rounds fired.
Who knows how many the Romanians fired through it but I bet it was thousands as well. I bought him a 10/22 about 5 years later and saw the ammo consumption triple and the 1st shot accuracy decline as it's more fun "walking it on target" when someone else is buying the ammo. Hard to blame him for that, but the M69 was the one that really taught him the values of marksmanship, and firearm safety. In other words, if you can find one for a decent price, buy it..... You won't be disappointed for the price.

Terrible triggers, but very accurate. i bought two of them and kept the two original mags, sold off the one with the two taiwan mags. Gonna scope mount it with a 10/22 scope mount plate epoxied (marine tex) to the reciever. The romanians did have a number of k-98's after ww2. they fought on the eastern front with their nazi 'allies' but used mostly vz-24's.

I talked to a guy I know at work who grew up in Romania. He said that when he was in the equivalent of the 8th grade, he and all his classmates would get bussed to a local military range and practice shooting the M69. In middle and high school they actually trained on the full sized AK series rifles.

3 or 4 are in use here, with my kids, and each came with a very DRY stock. The screws that held the trigger guard and action were all loose, as was the buttplate. A couple weeks of BLO and a few shims and I had the stock back to what could be used regular like, and the screws and meet were all happily fitted, as well the shims made the trigger engaugement MUCHO better, so I have done all of them the same, but ones that go to the ocean to hunt get protected with Rustoleum spary paint, now many layers think and a real gem of a rifle under it all.
