My No4 has a what looks like a single rifling groove that is not very deep, but my BSA Commercial No1 rifle has about 3 or4 grooves that are wide and deep. Why are the different, and are there reasons for the differences?

jhharmon, There were a number of rifling schemes used with the No.4. The two dominant are 2-groove and 5-groove. 5-groove was the original design and based on the accuracy of the 2-groove M1903 Springfield and through MoD testing 2-groove barrels became a war expediant part. Following WWII 5-groove barrels again became the norm.

In like condition barrels there is no difference in accuracy.
