Wondering if anyone has a source for safe 44 wcf ammuntiion for this revolver. I’d like to shoot it before passing it on.

Check on "Cowboy Action Loads". Coltforum has some commentary on the subject. Several ads for 44-40 (44WCF) online but most appear to be "out of stock".
Title of discussion on Coltforum IS Cowboy Load vs Regular Load.

That's a neat gun. There is much debate about shooting any smokeless loads, even low power "cowboy" ammunition, in these older guns. Many people are going to recommend only shooting black powder loads out of an antique cartridge revolver, myself included. Buffalo Arms is one source for loaded BP ammo, but availability is sketchy.

I shoot 4.5 Trail Boss in my CAS 44-40's, nice light accurate load.

Nice, I always wanted a 1875..

Your best bet is to reload..Buy some brass, powder, primers dies and bullets..Starline brass should be out there..Get a cheap little Lee press and sit down and enjoy reloading some in your spare time..Or get the components and find a friend who reloads and have em make you some up..

shadez ------ I like the looks of your original Remington in 44-40 caliber. I have two replica Remington Model 1875 revolvers in .45 Colt caliber. One has a 71/2" barrel, the other has a 51/2" barrel and I think the 51/2"er is more accurate for my CAS shooting. Although I have no trouble hitting the steel targets with either one. I reload my .45 Colt ammo to CAS specs. and use the same ammo in my .45 Colt Marlin Mod. 94 lever action carbine.. You'll enjoy shooting your original Remington using black powder ammo only.

Appreciate the complement. I’ll be checking out some Reload data and see if I can’t get it going. I read these original weren’t very accurate…. Curious to see what that entails.

Thanks for insight- I’ll be looking for some dies and brass and seeing what I can come up with.

Great I’ll be looking into this
The Remington M1875 is much underrated. Frederick Russell Burnham carried one, his revolver is pictured in the Wikipedia article.
Here are some better photos of this beauty.
I’ll be doing the reloading route, really curious to see how it shoots

Nice

One suggestion for you on reloading..You should probably slug the bore and determine the best diameter bullet for your particular 1875..Bores can and did vary back in the day..If use too small a diameter bullet they could keyhole..

To be clear, my loads are shot in modern Uberti 75's, but it is still a very mild load.

Also

It takes a little more effort to clean up real Black Powder...But I would use real black VS smokeless..More authentic, safer on the old Gal, and it will even be more accurate with real black also..
Vee ------ Hey, very good looking repro '75's. I wouldn't want to steal your thunder but you mind if I post some shots of my two repro '75's & holsters?

Of course not, love to see more Remington's. And just for more chits and giggles, here is my new pair of Remington 1890's in 45 Colt, which oddly enough, the originals only came in 44-40! Got stags ordered for these too!

Nice 1875s..I did have a repro in 44-40 once, but I sold it..Should not have..Just about bought another a couple months at a local show..Looked around too long, went back a half Hour later..And it was gone..

I missed a Smith 1905 (M&P) in 32-20 that way,\. Cussed myself, of course.
Beautiful 1890's you have there. How do they shoot? I've always been fascinated with the web under the 1875's barrel and their heft. I'll post a couple photos of my repro '75's.
