Best use of air raid sirens I ever saw was in H.G. Wells "The Time Machine" -- when the Morlocks got hungry, they just sounded the dinner siren ----

What I liked in the old Civil Defense gear was the sealed water cans that after you used the water, you converted them to toilets. Had the instructions printed on the back of them. Had one for years that I used as a trash can in my office, but someone decided they needed it more than I did, and liberated it.
