I owned, both .308 and the 300 Win Mag.
Very good, accurate rifles.

Couple of things I didn't like!

The 'palm swell' on the pistol grip which was made for both left and right hand shooters and that made it too 'fat' to get a decent grip on.

I also didn't like the roughness in the action when working the bolt, it kind of felt like having fine sand inside the action.

I recently bought the 'new' Rem 700 XCR Tactical in 300 Win Mag, (comes with a green stock with a thumb hook)

This rifle is teflon coated for corrosion protection, amongst other things, and the action is so smooth and slick, absolutely nothing like the PSS model.

If you are thinking of getting a Remington 700 tactical rifle, then the XCR model is to go for.

The PSS is a run of the mill car, the XCR tactical is a race car.

The XCR is a race car? don't tell my Remington 40-X Tactial that, it might think it is a rocket ship.

I was simply comparing the PSS to another Remington Tactical rifle of roughly similar value but miles apart in terms of quality of finish.

If I wanted to mention a 'rocket ship' I would mention the Sako TRG 42 in 300 Win Mag but that would hardly be a fair comparasment, would it?

My Remington 700P in .308 will shoot better than I can, I have shot smaller than half inch groups @100 under the right conditions. I do agree that the palm swell does make the grip area feel huge. The new Savage 10FP with the McMillan or HS Precision stock would be my choice I'f I was to buy another tactical rifle.

Hi all I have had a PSS in .308 for just over 2 years now, and I will agree it will outshoot my ability at the moment, At the start it was bog standard with a Leupold Mk4 10x40 tactical scope it shot great even then but I found the adjustments on the scope to be too course I.E. 1 MOA elevation and 1/2 MOA windage.
So this was changed to a Schmidt and Bender PMII 4 -16 x 50 scope mounted in an Accuacy international 1 piece ring mount on a warne Tactical base Also fitted a Timney Trigger unit and a Badger Ordnance bolt knob this then all sits on an Accuracy International Chassis System with the dedicated Bipod unit, it now shoots and handles amazingly and is the dogs dangly bits in my opinion.

I owned 2 700P's at one time. Shot one and kept the other put away. Very accurate rifle, to say the least. I sold them some time ago to help fund some builds.
Just a note, the 700PSS was discontinued many years ago and replaced with the improved 700P. There is a big difference in their make up. The bedding block on the PSS stops at the front of the receiver, the 700P's continues inside the forearm for a considerable distance, making for a much stronger rifle. You have to make sure which one you do have. So many people just continue to call all of them PSS, out of habit or longing, I don't know. If I was looking to buy one and there were PSS's advertised, I'd ask the owner(s) if they actually were 700P's. If they didn't know, I wouldn't buy.

Thats true mine is in fact a 700P it had the alloy bedding block the full length of the HS Precision Stock which is a good bit of kit, but I had to try the AICS which I preferred. The barrel length is 26" with a 1 in 12 twist
