Refinishing a rifle stock

I have a rifle stock which has been painted over completely with a clear, shiny finish which may be a lacquer or another type of clear coat. By completely, I mean covering the plastic shoulder plate and grip plate, the metal mag plate, and all screws holding these in place. Is there any way of striping this finish without damaging the plastic plates or the blueing on the mag plate? I would like to replace the finish on this stock with a hand rubbed oil finish.

I would think that any of the citrus based strippers would work. It all depends on what the finish is.
Non that I know of will damage the blueing other than lye. Plastic is another story.

You need to disassemble it anyway. Then strip the parts separately. I'd leave the plastic ones be as most anything that takes paint off will soften them. Strippers wont hurt a real hot or rust blue, and I prefer to use ones without water in them, that wipe off with mineral spirits instead of a water rinse, because that raises the grain and causes some fuzz.
Hopefully it's not an epoxy or urethane-type finish. If it is, you'll need an industrial-grade stripper to remove it. Something like MEK (methyl-ethyl-ketone) which is what the Air Force uses to strip the paint off of planes. Put a little regular stripper on the stock and let it work. If it strips, you're good. If not, get some MEK at the local hardware or paint store. And I would suggest a total dismantling of the stock to get the type of refinishing job you want.
Has anyone ever tried Soy gel for stripping paint off a stock?
