Gentlemen,

I'm confused about the book(s) by Richard D. Law. In my search I have found what appears to be TWO (2) different books by him. ( different web sites )

One was listed as:

Backbone of the Wehrmacht / Richard D. Law.

The other was listed as:

Backbone of the Wehrmacht-The German K98K rifle 1934-1945 / Richard D. Law

ARE THESE TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BOOKS (?), or is it just the way they are listed ?

Thank you.

PS. If I made a mistake putting this post on this Forum, I sincerely apologize.

Thanks Dave.
Will do that for both books.
Do you happen to know if the information I posted on these books is for the latest editions available ?

I know the Backbone edition is the most current- the author died right after that.

Thank You mrfarb.
Other than Law's sniper rifles book I find 2 different versions of Backbone of the Wehrmacht.
One is just...Backbone of the Wehrmacht....the other is...Backbone of the Wehrmacht; German Kar98k rifles 1934 to 1945.
Am I correct in assuming the first is a work on All Mausers, and the second is devoted to just the K98 ?

If correct....should I also consider buying Mauser Bolt Action Rifles by Ludwig Olsen ?

Get Ball's Mauser Military Rifles of the World, the latest edition, and Law's Backbone of the Wehrmacht Revised Edition. The Law sniper book has errors, bad pieces, some bad info, though it's worth the purchase. Olsen's Mauser book is quite dated.

Senich's German snipers 1914-1945 is a better sniper book, IMO.
Law filled in the gaps with his estimates whereas Senich published what he could verify and left those gaps empty (generalization)
IMO, BBOTW and Ball's are the two essential Mauser books with Senich's for snipers.

You too Chuck, and welcome. My personal opinion is that Law's Sniper book is better than Senich. That isn't saying a whole lot. I look at Law's Sniper book from time to time. I haven't opened Senich in about a decade. It's dusty ;)

Senich's book is a good read, but doesn't have much hard information. Law's books have flaws, but there aren't any better books that I know of. Ball's book is great on general Mauser rifle info. Olsen's book was seminal, and interesting reading, but it's outdated. Get them all, check the forums every day, and you'll never stop learning.

Again, Thank You guys.
I WILL be sending for the reference books ASAP. Haven't forgotten about Bob in OH's CD either.
Reading recent ' turd alerts ' scares me a little, because until I acquire reference materials AND knowlege, I'm now a little concerned as to what I might run into out there.
What is apparent to your trained eyes, markings, fonts, correct parts, gunsmithing, etc., is lost on me at the present.
Guess I'll just have to be really careful.
Thanks again.

Welcome to the hobby Gun Shy. You are starting out the best way one can, so you'll be fine. With the resources available, and the guys on this forum who are always ready to help, basically in real time, I'd say the K98k collecting is the safest area of German WW2 collecting. There is no reason to get burned if one exercises common sense and wants to learn, which is most of the fun anyway. You won't find anymore knowledgeable guys in the world as are on this forum. Those turd alerts aren't designed to scare, but educate and keep the fakers on the move ;)
Cheers,
HB
