In case you haven't read the announcement (the one that is hard to miss, at the top of each page) the old message base will not be moved to our new home here. It will be up to us, the members, to rebuild the forum.

I have moved a few items that were stickies. This new format has some restrictions on the number of pictures per post and length of posts that we didn't have before. When trying to move Stephen Camp's post on the Defensive Makarov, I discovered the picture limit; North Bender discovered a problem with the "OAL" of messages when re-creating his ammo thread. Also, the pictures in the threads I was able to move are not the original size, as only the thumbnails were saved in the old forum.

What each of us can do:

• Some of you may have saved stickies or other important data and pictures, or perhaps you were the original poster. Please consider sharing that with us here by posting it, giving credit where due.
  
• Petition those members who contributed info to please repost it. (Stephen Camp's post comes to mind, I hope he still has the pics. It likely will be necessary for him to break it up into several posts.)
  
• Mine the old forum for nuggets worthy of reposting. There are 141 pages of posts there at 50 posts per page. Obviously a small percentage of these would be candidates for moving to the new forums--only posts with factual data, gunsmithing tricks, etc., need be moved. It's not necessary to move stuff like a gun show report or "new member" or "new Mak" posts. This is too big a job for one or two members. But if say, 20 folks volunteered, an organizer could assign seven pages to each participant to review and copy worthy posts to the new forum. As a bonus, those of you who fret about post counts would have an instant boost to same.

These are just some ideas off the top of my "Monday morning sinus infected" head. Feel free to add any ideas you may have or tweak those above.

Above all, let's rebuild the forum here to the same great resource it was at our old home.

ST, I started to scan through the old posts last night. But Vic has only given us 48 hours to work on this! Unfortunately I can't drop everything right now so I wish we had a bit more time.

ST also gave me a bit of advice on finding your old posts that worked well for me.

Open the "old forum" - the second link in Vic's post. Log in with your old password (I'm not sure if it's neccessary to log in to do this). Find your name on a post and click on it. That brings up your User Profile. On the right side you see a link to "Find all non archeived posts by xxxxxx". Clicking on that will bring up all your old posts. Pictures will have to be re-posted from originals.

We'll supposedly have 2 or 3 weeks to mine the home where we resided from August of 2003 to mid-August 2007. (Originally it was said to be 6 months when we made the first move, now it's down to just a couple of weeks.) I am still having some Log in issues, and can't get the MakarovDotCom name to work, so I won't be of much help until the log in is fixed. Easiest way I've found is to click on the Printer Friendly button for the post you want to copy, then cut and paste. If the post is over one page, it'll take a post per page unless you paste it all into one page.

Here's an example. It's not perfect, there are no pics, but it works.

How many of you guys out there actually have one of these? I saw the one Warbird had listed a few months ago but was ignorant this variant existed. How many were imported? What is the going price if you can actually find one? Can you post some pics if you have one. Any additional information would be appreciated. I'd love to have one but rarely see one for sale. SOG sold the dozen they had for about $225 IIRC. Tennessean? You recall? Tennessean was kind enough to put me in one at cost.

The ones PW Arms imported went for double that if I recall, due to an "enterprising individual" handling the sale of these.

How many of you guys out there actually have one of these? There's a few around, I just know of 3 that I've seen.
How many were imported? That depends on whose story you beleive, one SOG rep. reported they got a dozen but then another said it was @18. These were all Century imports. Dan got @24, again depends on the story and I don't think Dan ever said. These were all PW Arms imports.
What is the going price if you can actually find one? Don't really and don't know what the one that was posted by Warbird sold for. They sold in the 200-400 dollar range when SOG and Dan had them.
Can you post some pics if you have one. I have some pics but can't find them and don't want to dig through the safe to make any new one's.
Actual information (supported information) there's very little, they're Bulgarian and there's no certain years or serial numbers. They're random. When they first showed up there was a lot of speculation on what they were and why they were chromed with the Black Sea Navy story being the most accepted but I don't think anyone really knows.
They vary in condition but most appear to be well used and they vary from all chrome to ones with blued hammers, safeties and trigers and combinations of the three. I don't recall any having chromed mags and there was some mysterious black star grips that showed up.
I'm sure others will chime in but this is my version.

It was confirmed that there were some Makarov's produced by the Bulgarians for issue to their Black Sea naval forces, via my Bulgarian Contact at Arsenal. That is where the "Black Sea Navy" name came from. As originally issued they had all Chromed parts, including the magazine floorplates, and the Grips were solid black versions of the "Red Star" Military issue grip. As I recall, there were about 40 total of these imported into the USA that has been confirmed, SOG claimed to have had an even Dozen, PW Arms had around 20 - 22 that were originally sold by Dans Ammo, and later by a third party, and Century had another 8 or so at one point. I have handled / Inspected about 25 or so over the last few years, and they all had the Black Grips, and at least one chromed Magazine floorplate with the pistol. All of the pistols sold by Dans (and a few sold by Makarov.com, that we got from Dans) had the PW Arms Import markings, not sure what markings the SOG pistols had, have never confirmed anyone getting one from them. The CAI pistols of course had the CAI import billboard, and those tended to suffer the most as far as the Chrome plating goes, both that I have seen were pretty badly chipped and pealing starting at the Import stamping. At some point someone oh here had posted a picture of some Bulgarian Navy officers standing around, and one of them was wearing a Black Holster, very much like the Russian navel issue holster. If anyone has a copy of that pic, please post it here, I can't find mine.

Here's one of three that came from SOG. It's a century import and all parts are cromed. Didn't come with the black star grips though just the regular import grips.
By the way George none of these three have any issues with the chrome flaking or peeling.

I had a chance to buy one from a fellow board member a few years back. Was talking to my FFL and was all good till I said it was chromed. State of Kalifornia won't allow chromed Bulgarians because they haven't been tested on the drop test; only blued CAI imports are allowed!

What pistols they allow into this state is set by CADOJ and is very specific, down to finish, caliber and barrel length. It's not my dealers fault, as he's helped me DROS a few East German and Soviet Maks (exempt because they are C&R).

I've shot one of them a few times, probably 2 mags full just to see if it was ok. Typical bulgie results. The other one I haven't fired but it has been used in the past. I've taken both of them to several shows for others to look at, speculate on and get their opinion about them, the chroming etc.
I do have some safe queens Arsenal, Miltex SE, Simson Suhl, Norinco Chineese etc. that are new then some that aren't new but still reside in the safe.

I wish I was flattered with an overwhelming response of volunteers to help. As is, nothing is getting saved, I've had zero, zip, zilch, nada responses.

I re-did a couple of posts tonight, but it's heck on dialup, and I have a couple more forums to tend to also. On the 12 round Mag post I re-did, the pics will soon go to the ether unless someone can volunteer to copy, save and post them on their webhosting space somewhere.

The track record at gunboards is when they say an older version of the forums will be around for xx days, you take 1/10 of that usually. We've seen the intermediate forum (8/16/07 to 9/8/07) has already gone away forever. I suspect the old forums won't last the 2 weeks we were "promised."

Bender, Wrangler did a great job, I think I used the same format but didn't take time to edit out the extras. This can be revisited after the archive is gone or everything we want is x-ferred. (Ha!)

Bullets & all, I have no idea what all is in those 7,000+ posts, but I imagine a minority of them, maybe 10% at the most, were good enough that they should be saved as a reference. What each of us thinks should be saved may differ a bit, that's OK. My frustration is that going through 7,000+ posts is too big a job for one, two or even three folks. And if an organized approach isn't undertaken, the posts that are moved will be just the stuff from the most recent postings that's still on our minds.

I guess it's unrealistic to expect or hope for 10 or 20 folks to say "I'll take pages 1 through 10" or "I'll take pages 51-57" or whatever. I wish I could do it myself, but I can't.

Thank you for your kind words. The Duracoat thread was one I remembered reading (several times) recently and have hopes of applying someday soon, so I was particularly interested in saving it. Copying the text from the old board to a new thread was simple, following the suggestions Slim Tim made in an earlier post on this thread.

BUT . . . it was a decidedly nontrivial exercise to move the 12 photos. It took me an age to do it, and I'm wondering if there is a simpler method.

What I did was (1) select each photo (separately) in the thread on the old board and Save As to a file on my computer. THEN (2) I went into Photoshop and downsized each image to what I thought might be a small enough size to not upset the photo police on this new board (originals were 1-2MB each, while my small ones were all 100K or smaller.) I did no other manipulation, but THEN (3) did save the new, smaller images to another folder on my computer. THEN (4) upload each image to Photobucket. THEN (5) get the name/link for each image in Photobucket and copy it into the new thread here. (I kept the old thread open to make sure the images went in the right place in the new thread - thank heaven for the multi-tab browsing ability of Firefox that let me keep the old thread, new thread and Photobucket all open at the same time.) After previewing to be sure things came through, I just saved the new thread.

Is there any shorter way to get images off the web and into a thread here? The only thing I saw as an option to insert an image was to enter a link to another web site.

Also, some of the images in the original post were thumbnails. I sized all of the images down pretty small in Photoshop, but they all display as basically full width images in the posting. Is there a way to control this? Is it done within the thread, or is there something you do to the image itself?

I'm slowly going back through the old threads to see if there are others that would be of continuing interest to me, so I'd like to know if there's a simpler way in case I have to bring over another thread, and others might find it useful too.

I have found it to be pretty tedious, but important nonetheless. I'm not sure of a quicker way, but two things to consider. 1 - copy the text for now, maybe leave in the placeholders where the pics are supposed to go. 2 - then go back and get the pics. The links won't work to the full sized pics. If you right click on each thumbnail and check "properties" it will give you the correct URL to the original sized pic. It's pretty close, just change "www" in the url to "old", and also delete "forums/" if I recall correctly.

There isn't much sense in copying the pics and uploading them via the forum upload function, each user is only allocated so much web space for pics. It wouldn't be fair to expect anyone helping copy those old posts to use up their own web space here on the forums for the pics. Perhaps someone out there who knows their way around the free pic hosting sites can point us to a common location to park these pics. Then the posts will need to be edited with correct links to the pics. Better yet, perhaps someone may have their own website and have space they don't use/need?

You're right. It's A LOT of WORK! Hopefully, this platform we are fortunate to be using now, vBulletin, has a history of being continously supported by it's authors and is likely to be with us for a long time to come. (Crossing fingers.)

The thread entitled "How to tune the mainspring" was a good one. CB3 (Chan) posted his instructions for modifying the mainspring to lighten the DA trigger pull. A good number of us did this mod, myself included. It really works. It was probably 4+ years ago?

The threads I've brought over and labeled "Archived Post" are from the most recent 30 pages of the old forum (pages 1-30.) I agree that the mainspring adjustment thread would be another good one to save, but I just ran out of time. If I had gotten that far I know I would have saved it too, because I've used the technique myself.

When I get some more time I'll keep looking farther back, unless somebody else can come up with it in the meantime.
