Rebarrel a last ditch 99 or not...

221 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  heim412
Uncle gave me the Japanese rifle his dad's brother brought back from the war. It was deactivated by his father by crossdrilling the barrel and welding it closed. It's a Kokuru with intact mum, and the stock has been BLO'd to death, and may need some repairs to the forearm.

Barrels are available.... But is it worth the effort to try and swap a barrel?

Personally, I would say leave it as is and enjoy it as a wall hanger with direct family history. Once you re-barrel it, it will no longer be the exact rifle that was brought back. Last ditches can still be had in nice shape with a mum and matching for like $400. Gonna be way more than a $400 hassle to re-barrel the rifle you have.

Prices for Last Ditch all matching and with mum are well beyond the $400 mark. Prices in general have been skyrocketing.

Early war guns matching, mummed, and with dust covers and pods are well well over $400, if you look you’ll be able to find a last ditch in nice original condition for $400-$500 easily. Re-barrelling your rifle will make it no longer matching (barrel is not serialized but a true collector would be able to tell it’s not original based on proof marks etc.) and it will never be worth more than sum of parts

Thanks. I did buy a barrel.... Because, well.... Nothing gets cheaper, and my LD Nagoya barrel has such a poor fit, the barrel is hand tight, the witness marks are nowhere near clocked at torque....maybe it will work on it, as a backup. I need to post pics. I have some stock repairs, as whomever plugged the barrel didn't realize it was a 3 piece stock...and started to duffle cut it, so that needs cleaned and epoxied, then I will asses how hard to take down, even if it means making a new barrel clamp. My uncle was bummed his father had it plugged... As he never got to shoot it.

I’d leave as is

Also, the barrel might not matter as much, just be aware of sub par parts in circulation due to the trainer rifles used by Arisaka

I recalled a few years ago that some of those guns were being parted out and sold as regular rifle parts, which could be dangerous
