This S&W .455 MkII walked into and almost left a recent Ohio show. Apparently no one knew what it was or wanted it too cheap.

The first thing I noticed was no commercial proofs, no broad arrow markings. Thinking it might be a commercial, I had a fit when I saw the single crown inspection mark and RCMP mark, MP (mounted police) on the butt. The reference books note that some Smiths were obtained by Canada and went directly to the RCMP. Unfortunately the serial number is not in the published list but I am pretty sure it is right. I think it is a pretty rare bird compared to the more plentiful Colt New Services.

Paul:
You have a nice clean "Sgt. Preston" special there. MP only is correct. You MIGHT be able to glean some additional info if you write to The Commissioner, RCM Police, Ottawa, Ontario Canada ..."attention Historical Division" and ask. I'll get you the postal code later...it is somewhere here on my desk. When the RCMP absorbed many of the provincial police forces in Canada, they acquired what arms they had in stock and just kept using them. Eventually, standardization hit the cowboys too.
