I can't figure out the meaning of the "7" below the S/42. The markings below the 7 is the Russian "X" or crossed rifles. The front barrel band and the trigger guard assembly is un-numbered. The rear barrel band and sight leaf are match numbered to the barrel and receiver. The bolt is mismatched and ep'd.

that "7" shows up from time to time on RCs. a Russian mark, there have also been "1s" and just 3 dots reported. i have a blank receiver Luftamt stamped 98k with it as well.

the main explanation i've heard was the Russians were testing the metal strength on the rifle. may or may not be true but i've yet to hear another reason for it
