I have had this sweet old lady for about 12 years and have kept her in the safe the entire time. I took her out to the range and she showed me a thing or two. I'll start with a picture of the rifle and its markings:

Rifle:

Markings:

Targets:

In Summary the rifle shoots great and I can hardly wait to try it on the 100 yard range. I think that this particular rifle has more capability for accuracy than my current skill behind the trigger will be able to demonstrate. Thoughts?

Thanks

Hmmm, B and VKT marked(pretty uncommon for sure). The rifle is really nice & the group is respectable, it deserves more trips to the range!
Congrats on a good gun! I had a B barrel M39 once, but sold it off =+(
Perhaps I need to find another =+)

Nice targets, but it is "worse" than you believe; it's a M1891 Finn. A great example of why the "year one" model design was still manufactured. That kind of performance may be why they were adopted in the first place! Shhhh, quiet! What ammo? DDR

Hey! You are right! I just looked at the Stamp on the barrel & only a glance at the stock...Funny how one can miss some obvious features.....
Yep, those B & VKT barreled M91's are highly prized by many....Uncommon features with the B barrel M91 rifles =+)

Folks,

Thanks for the setting me straight that this is a M 1891. I think I saw an article by Vic that explains the 1942 Belgium Barrel stocks were assembled after WW2. All and all I am very pleased with this rifle and know it is a keeper.

I just ordered a hex receiver MN 91/30 from J & G sales. I think that MNs are becoming a little addictive. The go from 1 to 2 to 3 in very short order.

Anyone have any advice on reloading components to get a good overall length bullet in .311 or .312 for the Russian bores? I think I will have to reload to feed my habit :)

Slug your bore first. It may work well with 0.308" projos. Reloading manuals usually have pretty complete data, but you won't find everything you need to know in just one book, unfortunately. There is a slugging tutorial at www.7.62x54r.net. DDR

I've slugged my M-44 using the tutorial you hyperlinked above. I have not slugged the Finn yet. But as well as it shot the .310 mil surp ammo I'm thinking it is probably .308 to .310. I will slug the barrel to be sure. I've asked in reloading forum here for pointers to good projos and OAL tips. I don't think I'm ready to start casting. Midway has a good selection of .308, .310 and 3.12 bullets. (Now I'm hoping someone is kind enough to share pet loads to get me started)

That's the best thing I've read all day!! ;)

Saying that here is like standing up in the middle of an AA meeting and saying, "guys, I think this alcohol stuff is a little addictive!"

Exept for one difference. At AA the group would try to help the confesser overcome the addiction, here we just encourage him to feed the frenzy.

All,

Thanks - this board has really helped me get of the ground in my new found hobby. Lots to learn but Vic, Tuco and others have been very prolific in sharing great info. I think I read until my eyes bled the other night :)

Since nobody else mentioned it I'll point out that is also has the Belgian Liege proof on the barrel. There are B barrels, VKT/B barrels, and VKT/B/Liege barrels with the last one being the least common of the three. Congratulations!

I seem to recall seeing pictures of at least one M39 that was made from a cut down VKT/B/Liege.

Thanks -- this is the rifle that Tuco and you saved from a Bubba project before the forums were changed. You gave the good steer. It just took a while for me to get her out to the range and report back. Now that I know more of the history and how well these Ladies perform, I have no desire to change them one bit. :)
