I just acquired a Roth-Steyr as part of trade. It certainly is ranks high in the "Ugly Pistol" competition. I have a few questions. The pistol was my by Steyr and is marked Waffenfabrik Steyr on the top of the frame. The serial number is 2635k. Just how early was this pistol made?

The right grip has a metal disk and is marked "12 FK 701". I assume this is unit mark. Can anyone identify the unit?

I just looked it over, and there are no markings anywhere around the trigger guard. The only markings on the pistol are the Steyr marking on the top and the serial number on the side. I cannot see any evidence of metal being removed, or markings obliterated.

According to Manowar's Hungarian Weapons the unit is either Fliegerkompanie (Airborne Company) or Feldkanonenregiment (Field Artillery). It should have an acceptance date somewhere.

I don't think these are ugly... Steyr Hahns and Rast Gassers are ugly. I'd gladly trade your ugly Roth Steyr for something else!
