I just looked at 2 pistols.

1. Is a matching BYF 44 P38, in pretty nice condition, was offered to me at $ 650.00. Is it a decent deal ?

2. Is a 1916 DWM Luger, all matching #'s, waffenamp marked, with original holster, tool, and 2 mags
( one with matching # ). In pretty good shape also though does need a good cleaning. More questions on this one.....The magazines appear to have aluminum bases - should they be wooden ? At $ 12000.00 is it a fair deal ?

P38: If 'pretty nice condition' means no pitting, good bore, and original grips, then JUMP ON IT! If you don't want it after buying, I'll be happy to take it off your hands for what you paid.

I know nothing about Lugers, but twelve thousand dollars is quite a chunk of change!

A 1916 should not have an waffenamps, it would have crown proofs.

The aluminum magazines suggest that it is a police? Everything depends on what is matching, etc, police guns go for less than an untampered (but correct police rework). And many people call a lot of lugers reworks and they aren't.

Nice police luger, WW1 that went into police service and all matching, $800-900
Holster is from $100-$300, everything depends on if original, cut down, etc
Tool / marked? If blank worth around $40, if marked double that or more, everything depends on markings
Extra magazine, if in decent shape, another $100-$150

Original mags for the 1916 Luger should have wooden bases. Aluminum is WW2 era or post war mfg.
Waffenamps are from WW2 mfg equiptment. I can't recall any WW1 issue being restamped but I could be wrong. It should have all the necessary WW1 era proofs and acceptance marks on it along with the matching #s. Internally, the grips, firingpin and safety should also be ser#'d along with the other easy to see parts.

A 1916 DWM can easily be worth $1200 with a holster & accessorys,,but so much depends on true condition, % of original finish, condition of grips, bore, having the correct mags (though WW2 mags are valuable too, post war less so). The holster can be a $250+ item in itself. But again condition plays the big part. Even haveing been 'shoe polished' in the past,,a common thing to have been done to them, can bring value down considerably. A true WW1 era holster vs. a WW2 mfg makes a difference too.

My mistake ----- Luger is $ 1,200.00 !! Holster is marked, I believe the gun had a waffenamp on the barrel near the receiver, I will go back & look again.

Hello Rick N. I'd say that both prices are fair. I paid $700 for my all matching BYF44. A Luger with a holster and two mags for $1,200 is also a deal, at least in the New England area. See if you can't get a deal for both!

If the Waffenamt is on the barrel of the 1916 Luger and not on the receiver, it could be an indicator that the Luger was rebarreled for WWII. I'm sure they just restamped the barrel with the serial number of the receiver and the gun was then "all matching."
