How can you tell the difference between a maple vs a beech stock? I have a beech m38 and its clear as day a beech stock, however the m96 I got doesnt even look similiar. looks closer to that wood on the first rifle here, http://dutchman.rebooty.com/maple.html

Judging from the third picture I'd have to go with french walnut. The second pic has a beech look being a tad blotchy but it could just be dirt and time. The first pic also has a walnut look especially on the bottom of the stock. The last pic seems to show a little open grain like walnut. What's the date on the receiver and do the numbers in the channel match the receiver? Maple stocks fall in a certain serial number time frame.
Serial number falls into the range where it could be maple, or beech. More pictures would help
