I am not sure if this is the proper place to post this question/questions, if not please move to appropriate location. I have a model 1842 Austrain Loren Rifle Musket. The lock plate is all original from what I can tell, the problem is the hammer does not want to hold the half cock position while it is attached to the rifle, if I remove it it will hold it. If I try to attache it back to the rifle the hammer is to low to clear the nipple. It seems to have the proper tension on the main spring and hold's the cock position just fine. I guess my main questions are:

(1) Why won't it hold half cock when the lock plate is attached to the weapon?
(2) Why it will hold half cock while detached from the weapon, but won't clear the nipple?

Any suggestion are helpful tip will be appreciated. Thanks in advance
