But are there any laws not allowing the shipping the an antique (pre-1898) rifle to a forign country>>

Not worried about the other country,, just if its legal here in US to mail an antique to say England or France??

You won't find it on the BATF site because they have no jurisdiction over an antique since it's not even a firearm under the law. It's my understanding that you just fill out a customs declaration form at the PO like you do for anything you mail out of the country and pay the postage. Just be prepared to argue with an ignorant postal clerk.

Thanks thats what I was told by the person buying the antique,,My post office said no problem also,, but was wondering on legality

Just my opinion:

Keep in mind that "antique" in the USA is not the same "antique" in other countries. BATFE defines an antique firearm as being built before 1899. Russia, on the other hand, defines antique as anything over 50 years old.

On your part, you should be able to just write "antique" on the customs form, which should satisfy the USA side of things.

On the recieving end, the laws may well be different. Especially in such a gun-hating country like Great Britain. You may want to look up the British definition of firearms. I do not even know if the British recognize ANY firearm as an exception to their laws, regarless of age.

I think you will be ok mailing it as an antique from the US but the guy in Great Britain may have a hard time proving to his government that its an antique.

Make sure that the person receiving it knows that it is his obligation to make sure tha he can receive it and it is not your fault if his government will not let him have it.

When I import antique rifles from the US I always supply the seller with a copy of the NZ Police issued Import Permit to ship with the rifle(s). This puts everyones mind at ease with the state of play at my end.

The antique status of the rifle(s) under US law has absolutely no bearing on things in NZ. I don't even think we differentiate between "Antique" and "Modern" firearms.
