Was there any thought or reason that went into the K98 codes. I know BSW was the only one to use the initials of their company.

So how did Sauer come up with CE, 147, etc. Same with Oberndorf and the other manufactures.

It sounds silly but why CE and not CD or CS, was this just all random stuff?

The German military used enigmatic letter codes for the manufacturers on just about everything they procured.

This was in order to hide and keep the enemy from knowing the source of their equipment, which would in theory make it harder for the enemy to zero in on (bombing or sabotage of) specific factories that built things they didn't want the Germans to have a lot of.

The Schindler guy from 'Schindler's List' originally owned an enamelware company that supplied cooking pots to the Germans. It had its own letter code.

So did the ammunition factory he ended up 'running' (into the ground, intentionally).
