Found a chunk of info elsewere on Gunboards via Google

The Savage 340/Stevens 325/Springfield 840 series of rifles were made from 1950 to 1985. All rifles made prior to 1965 had plain pistol grip stocks, those made in and after 1965 had checkered stocks. There was also a 340C carbine model.
and another useful chunk outside Gunboards also courtesy of Google
Check the location of manufacture. Savage changed their location and if it is a Westfield, Mass address, it is not C&R as rifle production began there in 1960.
