I have a nice Finnish 91/30. As I was cleaning off the cosmoline, I noticed that the rifling grooves of the barrel seemed rather pronounced compared to my Russian 91/30. Are these barrels Russian or Finnish? The rifle has the Soviet hammer and sickle with wreath near the rear sight, is stamped 1942, and it is stamped SA on the left side of the receiver near the wood of the stock. Thanks in advance.

Alks nailed it. Your rifle is a Finn-marked 91/30, not a true "Finn 91/30". Usually we refer to the Tikka-barrelled 91/30's as being "Finnish 91/30" rifles. Yours was made at the Izhevsk arsenal.

As far as the lands go, I'd assume that your Finn-capture 91/30 just had less wear on it, and perhaps was better cared-for by the Finns (a common observation by M-N collectors).

By the way, welcome to Gunboards!

Thanks to all

Thanks for the great welcome and helpful information which settled a lot of questions I had. The stock and sling swivels are Finn at least. Anyway, if it wasn't for Christmas (I have 4 kids), I'd be picking up an M39 but we will see. This is a great forum.
