When the Mk.III* was approved, did serial numbers start again? Just wondering because I just picked up a specimen made at Enfield in 1916 that is serial numbered 14, and I wanted to know if it was really that early in production.

No, the serial numbers didn't start over because of the MkIII* changes. After Z9999 (IIRC, EFD used 4 digit s/n's...but no books handy) they would've normally started over.

That's the way I heard it anyway... :D

All of the factories just kept repeating their number sequences, independent of each other. A rough calculation indicates that there might possibly have been four or five rifles bearing each number...
