I realize this thread is pretty old but was searching for topics on Superposed guns and thought I'd answer.

The V designates 20 ga. - The 8 designates year of manufacture. In this case this alpha-numeric date code came from the 60's.

So you have a 20 ga. number 48975 made in 1968 and from the engraving pattern on the receiver, it is a Grade I Superposed.
