found an ad for sale, seller listed it for a friend of hers, whos father owned the rifle for many years, etc. one of those kind of situations.

all she has said is its a 1934 german mauser 8mm. ok....... so i start digging further asking what code is on the rifle, do all the numbers match, etc.

she emails back stating " the letters are BGUN and all the numbers match"

ok, now im confused, BGUN ? i never studied much of K98s before 1937 models, and i am wondering if this is the longer barrel rifle, before the k98 ?

the fact that its sporterized makes me but if its all numbers matching, well.... and its $300


what are your thoughts? snatch it up, or keep hunting ?

The letters are the commercial proof marks on the left side of the receiver. It started as either a Standard modell (bolt was originally straight) or banner Mauser. Bolt should also have B & U over crown proofs on the base of the handle. Standard modell stocks can be found, banner mausers like dr, drp cha'd stocks are hard to find in my experience. JL

looks like a sportered Banner - I can see remnants of the bolt cutout.
For 300 if matched its a steal. I would bet that the stock is original but butchered. Make sure the rear sight base collar is intact and not ground off.

what might it cost to find an original stock, and after so, what might the overall value be?

and again, this barrel will probably be longer than 22" right?

I wouldn't even blink- as long as the bore is good. Stocks are out there- keep looking. I knew a gent who picked up a drp in a sporter stock, and actually found the ORIGINAL stock for his rifle almost 6 years later!
If you found an 'undinked' stock, value would go up, just not as much if it had the one it started with..

how much will i expect to pay for an original stock and bands? how tough would it be to find ?

i cant afford to wrap too much money into the rifle.


were the stocks stamped with the serial numbers like the K98s were? can anyone teach me more about these rifles? the basics?

i know a guy who had one for sale, all matching, original stock, for $1000, is that the average rate?

I agree its a bargain "IF" original otherwise stock but the stock is a total loss from the looks of it and cartouche stocks are not common, or easy to find- most importantly they are not cheap when you find original/unpeckered.

I think its an opportunity but you will have to unload some cash into it to make a profit.. plus you will have to find a proper stock (hopefully the stock will tell you what this once was- as you see the stock is what makes a rifle what it is in this case with these commercial rifles..)

I'd buy it if I had the cash, its a good deal if original but its no piss your pant special..

half the fun is the searching for these rifles anyway. the price is right and if you never find a perfect stock for it and get sick of looking then you can always sell it...right? kysunfish is right on and if you compare this rifle to a common code pitted rc then there is no comparison anyway.
