What did the stocks look like? I understand they went walnut --> walnut stained birch --> birch. I have a 2 44 Savage , one really dark in color, the other (all matching rifle) a dark orange. What did the early ones look like?

Different lighting and different camera / phone camera have a big effect on the 'look' of the furniture - look at the difference on the forend between pics 1 & 2

This is a very early production (SN < 1000) Mk1 that was a scopeless T. It appears to have never gone beyond storage after the H&H work.

This is a Mk1/3 with a SN in the 0C range.

Thanks. What I'm doing is putting a 2c serial Savage back together. It was sported. I have a very clean low wood forend from a 7L rifle, so same time frame, same wood. The savage still has it's original buttstock, but the two pieces are very different in tone, so there will need to be some finish matching.

Here it is after 3 coats of oil. 2c serial 1942 Savage mk1 . Bought as a sporter . Handguards are Savage walnut, forend is a low wood walnut Longbranch , butt is Savage beech or birch (i always mix these two up) stained to match the walnut. Bolt is savage ,but numbers mismatch, mag was original and matching. I did have to find a stamped sight protector, but everything else was already in my parts bin.
