I got this one cheaply along with a few more items, so just out of curiosity I'm posting it here to see if anyone can shed some light on it.

I've no idea whether this is a modern piece, a WWI piece or some veterans associations post WWI piece.

Anyway it will look nice along with the odds and ends on a shelf in my collection room, but any info is appreciated. :)

There seems to be no cut & dried answer. The wappen is obviously a Garde Eagle with swept-back wings & Garde Star.

The addition of what looks like spines on the sides running down from the spike to the rosettes is what you might see on a feuerwehr helmet. That and there is simulated visor trim on the rear visor, also something you might find on a feuerwehr helmet.

My vote is a paperweight for a post WWI fireman.

I do not know the answer but have a couple of remarks.
The marble is IMHO not the kind that was used in those days for such "paperweights". For me this marble is rather "modern", I associate it with an other era, the sixthies. Of course, in itself, it's old enough because it was formed billions of years ago. I'm sure that a "marble specialist" can even pinpoint the quarry and at what time the exploitation of this kind of marble started.
The edges and sides (you can see the circular saw imprint) have not the polished quality that one could expect from a vintage piece.
The stem on which the helmet is seated is to modern for my taste also.
Is the helmet in copper/brass? (tried a magnet yet?).
I know Bayonetcollector will not take my remarks badly but to say it in short: for me this object (I like it:)) "doesn't have a vintage look or smell".
Not going to militaria shows very often, I admit to have seen and admired more "vintage like" specimens ... the next one that I like will be mine :D.

No problem, Big Commander. I too think this one has a modern feel to it, I picked it up as it was cheap and would look good on a shelf in my collection room, not assuming this is a priceless collectable item.

This is a fun and odd piece that fits along other odds and ends. The similarity to a firemans helmet is interesting, though. Is this a fantasy piece or molded from something?
