Picked up an 1894 Steyr GEW 88

I picked up 2 rifles at the LGS last week. Both caught my eye because I was looking for unaltered stocks on something different that I didn't already own. I got 2 GEW 88's. One is an 1894 Steyr and the other is an 1890 Loewe Berlin. I'm totally new to these rifles and would appreciate any info you could provide. I normally do not buy rifles that I can't take to the range, but I just really liked the look of the Steyr. It was sold as a display/non-shooter because of the bore. There was rust just about everywhere on the gun including the bore. After several evenings of work everything but the bore looks fine. The barrel cover was rusted pretty bad under the wood, as were parts of the receiver. The bore is much better than it was, and I will continue to work on it to make sure I kill off any active rust. Considering it's age, and the fact that the receiver and chamber were not altered for the newer "S" ammo. I don't know that I would have tried to shoot it anyway. I don't reload and don't know the availability of 8x56 ammo. I assume 8x56 is what this gun is chambered for, if anyone knows? I'm happy with the way it turned out, I'm actually displaying it on the wall of my home office. It has a chip out of the stock beside the cleaning rod groove, and no cleaning rod. I mentioned it in another thread and someone (sorry forgot who) said it probably saw service in Ecuador. Humid climate may explain all the rust.
Everyone likes to think they got a decent deal on their rifles, so I was wondering what a ballpark value would be on a rifle in this condition, thanks, Joe. Pics in the next post below.

8x57(.318) if they are commission rifles. Later converted to "S"(.323). AGB-1

Sorry having problems with pics
It was not converted to "S", so regular 8x57 ammo? The commercial stuff,8mm?
Regular ammo is .323. Most hand load for these because of their age and the original round is not as "hot" as the later 8x57(.323).
There is lots of info on these on the Web.AGB-1
