Finally someone got the message in the Pentagon.

Pentagon plans troop surge in Afghanistan
The Times ^ | December 6, 2008 | Tim Reid in Washington

Posted on Saturday, December 06, 2008

The Pentagon has begun a massive building operation to construct new barracks and facilities in Afghanistan for 20,000 extra US troops that will pour into the country early next year.

The surge of additional forces, to combat the perilous and rapidly deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, comes amid growing tensions between the US and Britain over the possible deployment of extra UK troops - and the performance of British soldiers already there.

There are 8,100 British troops in Afghanistan, mostly deployed in the southern Helmand province, where the Taleban insurgency has been the most fierce and effective. The US has had to send forces south to bolster the British and Canadian contingents, amid growing allegations among American military officials that the British have not effectively taken the fight to the enemy.

Three Canadian troops were killed on Friday by a roadside bomb outside the southern city of Kandahar, and on Thursday two Danish soldiers were killed.

I don't need to. I've been saying since May that we need to increase troop strength in A., and all the time you have been mocking me.

Looks like I was right, as usual, and you were wrong to have mocked me.

Of course, you'll never admit I was right. Pride, one of the seven deadly sins, keeps you from doing so.

You really do have an exagerated view of your own abilities, don't you? NPD will do that too people. Unfortunately, your biography doesn't manifest your views (fired engineer doesn't cut it). Since Spring you have done nothing but find every article you can that runs down NATO, ISAF and the conduct of our operations in Afghanistan in general. That is a luxury that you have. Of course, everyone here knows that your real experience doesn't pass the edge of your couch. Oh wait, don't tell me, you took a three hour course in Operational Tactics at Billy Bob's Warfighting School and Bait Shop? lol.

Nice, but not much of a concession speech.

Just admit you were wrong and we can advance to a higher, more enlightened plane.

Of course, everyone here knows you were WRONG when it came to calling the TRUE status of the sit in A. You and your Polly-Anna version just didn't fit reality.

Come on, I know you can say it," I was wrong and Russell was right."

Come on, be honest.

Concede what, that you have no grasp of world politics or military matters? You're the archetypical Internettoughguy. We've watched you melt down here numerous times, while trying to justify matters that you have no knowledge of. God knows how you'd react in a real world situation. As for my view on the "sit" in Afghanistan, I base that on ground experience, and a lot more resources then you'll ever have. Didn't they teach you about "need to know" at Bill Bob's Mercenary School. You are truly entertaining for anyone who is out here on the job.

You experience didn't lead to a correct analysis.

You're in denial. You were wrong, I was right.

Everyone knows it.

Funny, but the only people who respond about your "predictions" are the ones on record who are laughing at you. Has it been this way your entire life?

So 23 years huh? Tell us, why did you leave after only 23 years? Medical?

You strike me as the type who'd rather still be in the service given the level of hostilities back in 2004.

If it's any of your business, and it isn't, I retired 1 Jan 2006. No medical retirement. I just decided I'd had enough and they had me behind a desk at a schoolhouse, so I elected to leave for more exciting things.

So, why didn't you ever do military service? You talk such a big game I would have figured you would have jumped at the chance.

I was accepted to UNM NROCT in 1982. Figured I would just put it off till I got out of College and go OCS.

Are you currently teaching the Iraqi army or their police (Yes, I know, not that it is any of my business)?

And when you got out of college, you didn't do OCS.

As for what I'm doing currently, why don't you come over and find out for yourself.

I had a job opportunity and at 25 wanted to make some green and start paying off all that debt I had accumulated.

No silver spoon here. I worked though college, some years part-time student, and took loans. Most people I knew had mom and dad paying for it. Not me.

About coming over there: It is a lot cheaper if you just told me yourself.

Then again, why not just tell me? What's the OPSEC with this gig?

I hate to rain on you parade, BR, but the Pentagon has already notified Prez-elect Obama that a surge isn't going to make much difference. A 'Surge' of 20,000 troops in reality means about 2500 combat troops, assuming that the current in country ratio of of seven support troops to one combat soldier holds. Furthermore the Pentagon has said that the troop increase will be mainly used to maintain security in Kabul and the surounding countryside. More troops may become available after 2011 when we are scheduled to remove all troops from Iran.

Afghanistan has the potential to become Obama's albatross just as Vietnam was Johnson's and Nixon's. It will be interesting to observe the changes in opinions of both Obamaphile's and 'phobes as this mess continues over the coming years. Or decades...
