I received a treasured item from my wife's grandfather a few months ago. He served as a Marine artillery officer during the WWII and saw action in many of the major island hopping campaigns. On Peleliu, he acquired a Japanese map of the island defenses. This map was examined by intelligence and later cleared for release. Anyway, here are some detail pics of the map. I'll post some pics of the whole map soon. Any help with translation (Edokko
) would be great.

A really nice family item. How large is it? Can you post a photo of the whole piece so we can get a flavor of what it looks like ?

Hi,

I am a Peleliu battle researcher and have a connection with a local USCS Profesor who can read old Japanese. He just translated a Japanese diary for me that was captured on Attu in 1943. Anyway, please post a picture of the entire map so I can have it translated in its entirety. There are a few symbols that I can recognize (I also have a captured Japanese defensive position map) that indicate gun positions/pillboxes. Also, need a shot of the beach/invasion area.

Thanks, Eric

I second Eddoko's recommendation. Eric made a super nice map for me a few years ago which I have taken to Peleliu twice (I've been there eight times).

MGed, I would love to have a copy of the map. Any chance you would be willing to make, or have a copy made? I would gladly pay for the effort.

Eric & John, I took some more pics this morning and I'm looking into getting the map copied and then suitably framed. I'll see about getting several copies made for anyone interested. The map measures approx. 22"X27" and is not a complete map of the island. It depicts the central portion of Peleliu.

Edokko, good to hear from you again. I'll send some larger pics to you.

Here is the entire map. The beach areas shown are Beach White 1 and Beach White 2, but no defenses are noted there. Only the northern part of the airfield is depicted.

Thanks for the additional pictures. Seems as though this map was for a specific Japanese unit assigned to defend Hill 100 ("Walt Ridge" or "Higashiyama" as it was known by the Japanese) since that is the only hill mass that has defensive positions labled. The revetted positions on the eastern side of the ridge are sybols for storage caves. I explored the area in 2004 with a former Platoon Commander who neutralized those caves back in 1944! I would love to purchase a copy of that map.

Thanks, Eric

Now that is a unique item. I also would love to buy a copy of that map from you. What a fantastic display item. And for whiteshark to have actually explored positions located on the map is really interesting. I would love to do things like that someday. Hope there isnt too many snakes in there though!

Eric, my wife's grandfather is still alive and in his nineties. I don't know if he found the map or got it after it was examined by intel. He's not the type to talk too much about his experiences. He rose to the rank of Capt. by the end of the war and went on to retire at the rank of Brig Gen. in the reserves. My mother-in-law did interview him a few years ago for a paper she did, so we have a record of the islands he fought on and some interesting stories.

It's amazing you explored those areas Eric. Some day I'd like to visit the island.

Here's a stamp on the back side of the map.

I'll see about getting about a dozen copies made next week and mailing tubes. I'll post an update when that's completed.

Something I didn't notice before. The hand written date on the map "Oct 1 1944" is around the the date that Walt's Ridge was attacked. That is likely the place and date the map was found.

I made several copies (24"X36") of the map. They turned out pretty good. $12.00 will cover the cost of the copy, mailing tube and Priority Mail shipping. PM or e-mail me for payment info. I will take paypal or Money Order. Those of you who have already e-mailed me, I will be contacting you.

Thanks.

MGed,

Just received the Peleliu map today and really appreciate the time and effort that you took making copies! I was particularly interested in seeing the two artillery emplacements shown on Hill 300 ("Old Baldy"). One of them still exists in a cave there! It is a 105mm howitzer and was destroyed by US counter-battery fire. Live rounds still litter the area.

Thanks again, Eric

I wonder how this map was passed by US Intelligence? Seems like there is pertinent data on Japanese artillery positions labled on Walt Ridge and Hill 300. My guess is that the ridge(s) were already in US hands.

Edokko and I had some sake and looked it over. If I recall correctly, it was a planning map from the 3rd Artillery Battery. It was indicating what positions had been made and what were still in construction.

My memory is a bit fuzzy about it... and the sake didn't help!

Across the top was the bit about the 3rd Artillery Battery. The bit in the lower left corner I can't remember. Edokko had some trouble with the legibility of the last few Kanji.
