Tomorrow I will be joining the zipper club as I am having open heart surgery to repair an enlarged aortic root (aneurysm building) and a bicuspid aortic value. Needless to say I'm a little nervous about this whole deal. I'll be in the hospital for 5 days and will not have or want access to a computer. I sure hope there will be some very interesting post on the forums for when I get home as I'll need something to keep me from going stir crazy while at home. Wish me luck and hope to talk to all of you soon.

Good luck to you. I hope your nurses as as good as ours. I have been taking care of post bypass patients for almost 15 years. Best wishes for speedy recovery.

If it's any comfort to you, I've known several people who've had open-heart surgery similar to yours, and they all recovered with no problems at all. Take it easy and all should be well. Best of luck.

Jay, I had open heart surgery Jan 4..triple bypass and mitral valve repair. Out of the hospital in 4 days. Those surgical teams are fine tuned and efficient..ready for anything. You will be just fine..if you were not at least a little bit scared something would be wrong with you! Do not expect to be up to your old self running at 100% for several months..the first few weeks can be a bit rough. I am still having some problems..had an esophageal endoscopy 2 weeks ago and then they shocked my heart twice. Spent 24 hours in the hospital..but they stabilized my fibrillation and got my heartbeat down from 118 to 74. You might be taking several drugs post op..blood thinners etc. Do not, I repeat DO NOT try and be a tough guy. The part about no lifting over 5 pounds, not raising your arms above your head and other doctors orders is really important. I would post a pic of my freshly stapled chest but you will have your own soon enough. The folks on the Gunboards are your friends, even though you have not met most of us, we are praying for you. Keep us posted on your recovery..not to worry about this procedure..you will be fine.

Good luck. take a large pillow with you (in case they don't give you one) so you'll have something to hug in case you have to cough, sneeze, or laugh. When pop had his done, he said that pillow was a lifesaver.
y'all have a good day, Keith

edit: you're not having it done in huntsville are you? my mom works in the heart lab there. If that's where you're gonna be, I'll sneak in some mosin porn for ya!
