Luftdichter Patronenkasten is airtight cartridge case. Kauritleim is a specific glue manufactured from urea and formaldehyde which is used to glue plywood. The Sonderkart. marking means special something. I don't know what the kart. is short for. Heeres Munition is army ammunition. I have no idea what the numbers and letters mean.

The green box contained 6 special charge cartridges for the 10,5cm light field howitzer Model 18...These had a special supplementary bagged charge for extended range. German howitzer ammo was seperate loading...the cartridges came packed seperately. Each cartridge had multiple powder increments, and were closed with a cardboard plug. You determined the range you were shooting, consulted your gunnery tables, figured the elevation of the gun, and it would tell you what powder increments you needed. The artilleryman would then pull out the cardboard plug, and remove the charges not needed. The projectile was loaded into the gun, rammed home, then the cartridge, breech closed, pull the lanyard, shot out....

ETA To expand on this a bit....notice it say Sonderkart. 6 (Sonderkartusche 6). The standard lFH 18 cartridge conatined 5 increments, numbered 1-5. As I said, you removed increments to change the range of the shot...very short range, you'd maybe only use increment 1....a little more, use increment 1 and 2, and so on. Extremely long range used the special charge 6. To use it, you would remove all 5 increments, and replace with the single powder increment 6. My guess is this box contained these increments in their own individual cans. The standard transport carrier for the lFH 18 cartridges is a wood and wicker case that held 6 complete cases (I have one of these in my collection).

I have a sonderkart. box for the the 15cm sFH18, which was a wooden box that contained 4 individual tins that would each hold the special supplementary charge. The standard transport case for the 15cm cartridge case was a wooden box that carried three complete 15cm cases with the increments. So the supplemenatry charges were transported seperately, and only used if needed. I would guess that it worked the same for the lFH18.

The German artilleryman did not use these supplemental charges unless absolutely neccessary, as they put a lot of strain and wear on the guns and the recoil mechanisms, in fact they had to pull special maintenance if they used them...

I am not sure on the yellow box...any other markings or labels? The markings on the lid just mean "Airtight Ammunition Box"

Hi

The Luftdichter Patronenkast B is an airtight ammo box (model B) for 1500 7,92x57rounds.
Normally, it has a label (inside, as well as outside) which explains the specific kind of 7,92 ammo.

regards
Krt
