They are moderately rare, but do show up from time to time - often with nameplates hinting they may have been prize or presentation items. Is there a "P." preceeding the serial? (Serials of the private-series 96's are not given in the usual references, but all were probably below 5000 - where the 1911 private-series began. References to 1911's in the 500-5200 range are apparently the result of a typo in one of the common reference books.)

Most 89/96's are private ones as not every owner spend extra money to have it converted to 96/11 just to be able to fire the more accurate GP11 cartridge, almost all military 89/96's were converted into 96/11's.
