Nothing odd about it. The cross guards were/are welded to the blade/tang, and the wood grips are fitted over the weld. In this case the very large blob of weld may be more recent and the grips are missing, but that's it......... Jon

Thanks, I thought that weld would be hard to fit the grips over, should be some bayonets with grips which you could see where they were ground/cut to fit.
