Do you mean that the serial doesn't fall into the range for 1943 BSA production?

Are you sure it's A1... and not AI...?

strange serial #

It appears to be the same as the #1 used later in the serial# and identical to the large #1 in the S51 under the stock.. The serif on the top of the digit extends to the front same as all the others. Thankyou for the reply! Best Regards.
Also: Yes I mean it doesnt seem to fall into the 1943 BSA production.. Thanks agian

A two letter prefix beginning with "A" would definitely fall into BSA's '43 production range. FWIW, I've got a BSA SMLE that got a bolt and action body replacement...the bolt has what is clearly an "I" standing in for a "1" in the serial number, so it's certainly not unheard of. Do you have any pictures?
