I’ve read in various sources that the 22 trainer SMLE rifles were designed to shoot “any” 22 caliber rim fire. If that is the case, does 22 magnum fall under the “any” category, or is that excluded?

No. Anything up to 22lr is the limit. Besides, the 22 mag in spite of being 22 rimfire is dimensionally different in both case and bullet diameter. I don't think it even hit the US commercial market until around 1960.

Now, the larger 224 jacketed bullet can be forced down a 22 lr tube. Not recommend but it has been done following a rechambering. The 22 lr revolvers use a different cylinder for the mag, and the barrel is opened up a bit for the copper jacketed bullet. Meanwhile, when using the 22lr cylinder the soft lead waxed or copper washed bullets upset to fill the bore upon firing.
So again, the answer is no. The 22 wmr will not fit.
