I make some pretty dumb comments sometimes. It's nice to be corrected, and not smacked around. Not that I have been in the past. Over all, my stay on this board has been very good. I would like to thank everyone for their contribution in helping me learn more. Your combined knowledge by far out ways all else.

Yeah, so many of teh old heads jump down newbies throats and it's nice to see people start treating eachother like equals. The man with one post could easily have 10x the amount of knowledge and guns that I do.

I have noticed this as well though and its nice to see people getting along a little better

I'm noticing more beginners' questions from new members and more friendly answers given to them, so maybe Vic's new enforcement policies on rude speech are having a positive effect.
Well put Stalin's Ghost!

...I think you hit the nail right on the head, Stalin's Ghost!...I think it was time for the chaperones of this house-party to reign things in a bit anyway!!...I know that I have a blunt way of asking questions sometimes, and I may have developed a resulting blunt way of answering them as well...it's nice to be reminded WHOSE house this is from time to time...we are ALL just guests here!!...

Thanks for posting this!!

I know it sounds taboo, but I do enjoy reading about the 1943 refurb 91/30. My interest started with a "cheap WW2 Russian carbine. wait, it has a side folding bayonet!!! awesome." Now, my collection has increased both in breadth and depth (according to the Fiance', too many). I'd just like to think that newer members are the future experts. Everyone was new to these at one point (except for guys like Ted, Tuco, and others. Oh, forgot to metion Sergei and Leon).

I still have love for my 1942 Izhevsk 91/30 that I over paid for at Cabela's. It is like a first girlfriend to me, though unlike a girl that you can't hold on to as you discover others. My first rifles I can keep.

The way it really should work is...

1. New member posts a really basic beginner question
2. Experienced members offer a simple response, as well as links to where to do more reading on the subject.
3. The new member has read the available info, and asks more advanced questions (because the literature out there is not always comprehensive)
4. Six months later, after a lot of reading from MN.net and old threads, the new member is now much more knowledgeable.
5. Steps 1-4 are done in a polite and cordial fashion.

In step 2, I say "simple response" because we can't write a long, exhaustive response to every newbie question that is posted. For example, if someone posts, "I just got a Mosin, it has a SA mark, but also all sorts of other marks. Which of these are Finn marks?"

A measured response might be, "Typical Finn marks will be [SA], "D", or "41", and perhaps "3600" as a proof. Check out https:..... for some good info on the subject."

You've now answered a basic question and enabled the new member to educate himself on the subject.
