I see Springfield 1903's for sale at some gun shows. I never check them out because I know nothing about them. I would really like to get one. I mostly stick to German and Swedish rifles, and I can only fit so much info. into my head in a given time. What would be a good book to get for a newbie?

Thanks!

If you want a shooter, many people say don't buy one with a serial number than 800,000. Early 03s supposedly were not made with the best steel quality and most people say to stay away from them for safety concerns. They're great rifles, though I personally prefer the 1903a3. Since you said you stick mostly to German guns, the Springfield won't feel very foreign to you. It feels much the same as my k98s do as it is of a Mauser design. Fun rifles if the price is right!

William Brophy's book dates to 1985, although it is still in print. At several hundred pages long, it can be a little daunting to newcomers. I would agree with Mike D that Bruce Canfield's book might be a better place to start. It has a few errors, but will get you started in thr right direction. Mostly history, but some parts.

You might also ask yourself what type of M1903 are you looking for - a shooter or collector.
