Hi all - I am new to the forum and the proud owner of a recently acquired 6.5x55 Mauser. I read so many good things about this caliber and Swedish mausers in particular that when this one appeared within my range of perception at a local dealer I jumped on it. It is not pristine but I won't be embarrassed to show it to my friends. Certainly shootable. Got it for $250 with a lifetime guarantee that if it stops shooting the shop will fix it. They are good to their word.

I am not entirely certain what I have here. I think it is a m96 full length rifle made in Germany in 1900. I am a bit puzzled by the bent bolt and the rear sight. Can't find that combo on the net. There are also two small tapped holes in the rear portion of the receiver that might be a bubba attempt to mount a scope - don't know. Any of you folks out there able provide a little more information?

I think I have properly attached photos - not really certain. I hate Windows 8 more than you can possibly imagine.

well, appears that it was D/T for a diopter and bolt is:
a) not matching.
b) was bend by one of the previous owners (this is probably the case).

looks like a neat rig, previously a FSR rifle.

That is a typical FSR rifle ( civilian target shooter ) . The threaded barrel is a military version installed after 1955 to use a blank firing device . The torch bent bolt was done by the civilian or his gunsmith . Only the M41 & M41b snipers had torch bent bolts & yours does not have the mounting holes on the left side for the scope base . The 2 holes are for one of 5 diopters that have a diagonal hole pattern . However , there are 3 different locations for the holes . So , not all are interchangeable . You would need the one to fit your hole pattern . The SM sikte is a civilian version of a micrometer target sight . You would not need that if using a diopter sight .

Here is a chart for the hole patterns of the 5 diopters with a diagonal hole pattern . See photo below :

If your bolt has the #230 on the ball , it is matching .

For $250 , I say you got a great deal !!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations .

D & T = drilled & tapped for the diopter sights . Here is an example of the most common diopter used on Swedish target rifles , the Söderin .

OK then - it is a civilian target model that was re-barreled sometime after 1955 with a military barrel. The bolt was bent by a previous owner. The diopter thing is interesting ( I looked it up) but I will not pursue that any further as I am primarily a hunter and recreational plinker. Cool stuff. I feel another compulsive behavior forming. Wife won't like that at all.. oh well - as Willie Nelson sang "I have a long list of real good reasons for everything I have done."

As well as hunting. I received a rifle once that was drilled & tapped for GF sight. I found one and installed it. Makes shooting 2" groups at 200 yds pretty easy. Plenty good enough for hunting. Makes for a light, easy to carry rifle compared to a scoped rifle and is about as accurate as many scoped rifles.

Interesting - I will do a little research regarding diopter - could be another fun way to spend money er... enhance the enjoyment of my rifle. Can anyone recommend a source of said sights? Thank you all for your interest.

Price varies , depending on the model & condition . A Söderin rear diopter is about $125 . Front sights vary $50/$100 range . EBAY is a good place to look . A few dealers out of Sweden have them . Good guys to deal with .

You did well on you FIRST Swede. Buy some Privi 6.5x55 SP and sight it in (save the brass). You'll be ready for Fall hunting with that factory ammo. Diopters are just Peep sights. And, 2" at 200yds is relatively common with the Swedes. Try your open sights, you should be very pleased.
