I purchased my first Mosin a few weeks back and have had a blast with it at the range. Yesterday a guy told me I should get a synthetic stock for it since the wood ones were, as he put it, worthless.

Granted the gun is not in great condition, but I like the look and feel of the original stock. Are there any advantages to a synthetic stock on these?

I get the feeling he was just an opinionated contrarian.

The only reason would be to preserve the original. Otherwise the synthetics are worthless.

To trade a perfectly good original stock for a synthetic would be like taking a Rolls Royce running gear and putting on it a Nash Rambler body. If you like the original stock keep it where it belongs. Let your friend live on in ignorance.

You totally got it correct, it's all about the feel, the look, the history about your rifle, being just as it was when it left the hands of the last soldier that carried it.
