Would appreciate any solid info on my NER (New England Remington). What we have here is a perfectly good US contract NEW that has been rebarreled with a Remington barrel. The bolt is a mismatch, but also NEW US contract range. There is also what appears to be a metal inventory tag attached to the trigger guard, #1500. The Remington Collectors' Club says it is not a Remington tag. Bannerman? Bubba? Or? Thank you - it's a keeper, but still a mystery.

The E looks different than NEW E stamps I have seen. If it is a NEW E stamp then I am at a loss for an explanation. It may have been made up of left over parts after production stopped, but at this point anything I have to input is pure speculation.

Could it possibly be an arsenal example to check for interchangeable parts between the manufacturers? A QC thing to make sure both manufacturers were making the parts within the same specs. Think I read of this practice involved in other US firearm programs during the twentieth century. Maybe the M1917 program, Winchester had problems early on.

Or it could be what was left over to sell to the govt to make up for the losses on the defaulted contract. Inventory tag may be an early inventory control tag for whomever was selling them. For nstance, Springfield Sporters used such tags.

WOW a real collector, very nice hybrid. I remember reading that Bannerman bought alot of left over US M91 parts, not only to build sporters; but to build M91s for sale to other countries governments/groups. Perhaps, this was one that was built by them, but never sold. Maybe the tag is the price $15....I know that is a stretch! My US NEW has the bomb on the rcvr in the same place...same weak stamp. Stevens Arms Company bought parts from Remington after WW1; don't know if they bought any NEW parts or if they built any M91s. I doubt it.

Gentlemen: thank you for your kind words and interesting input - food for thought. Just wish I could ID the tag; that might answer a lot of questions. Well, another item for the to-do list! Attached are three other photos to add to the indentification of the rifle. And thanks again for your responses. I've been hooked on the M91 for years, and glad to meet other kindred spirits through the Gunboards Forum.

As the end of production approached, was there any parts trading/sales with/to Remington/NEW?
