I have a Winchester 1894 SRC made around 1900 that had a plate of some sort in the stock, has anyone ever seen this shape of a plate in a stock?

Interesting. Maybe a place to stash the hunting license or mad money. Don't think it's factory, but I really have little clue.

Would bet a sizable chunk of change it isnt of Winchester origin. The quality of the inletting seems to have been done buy an unskilled previous owner. Also a clue is the fact this is just a standard carbine. About every gun presented to another individual was a much higher grade of gun. This was Winchesters least expensive gun. A solution to the ugly cut would be to make a silver plaque of the same size. Then engrave the plate as you wish. It sure wont hurt the value.

I think some bonehead took a notion to make an addition to his rifle. Could have been for almost anything. I would buy another butt stock on Ebay or Gunbroker and replace it, by the looks of the wood to metal fit at the tang that one is pooched anyway.
