Hello: I am new to the forum. My close friend brought back a type 53 dated 1960 from Laos. It has all matching numbers and has not been fired, at least not since then. We are going to order some 7.62x54 ammo, clean the barrel and fire a few rounds. Besides a shoulder pad, (we are a bit long in the tooth). Any other tips we should be aware of?
I would take it out of the stock and inspect the metal under the wood, just to make sure it is safe to fire. If you are shooting surplus 7.62x54R, make sure you clean it really good as soon as you are done shooting. Don't just put it away and say "I'll clean it tomorrow." Surplus ammo is corrosive, so clean it right away.
