Here's what my Dad brought back; would the cleaning rod that JarrodM has for sale be appropriate? I'd ask directly, but I thought I'd get more info abot the rifle here... The last 3 of the SN on the receiver (59881) match the bolt, the "tip" of the safety, the firing pin, and the front lug. Any place else I should look? I plan on ordering some ammo and seeing how she shoots.

Both of my brothers have a T-38(?); I haven't seen them in a while but I know they're a lower caliber... the rifles, not my brothers! :D

I'd appreciate any info! Thanks!

On the cleaning rod, you will need the 23.5" one, not the short rod Jarrod has for sale.

Nice rifle.

Thanks, I got it when my father passed away a few years ago. I remember it from when I was a kid. It's never been fired while in our possesion, and had cosmoline all over it when I was young. Looks like it's in pretty good shape for it's age... minor surface rust and the wood is dinged in places. Would the fact that the numbers all match be a pretty good indication that it would be safe to fire? I'm not an idiot (wife might argue), I'm mostly worried about headspace... things that I can't visually inspect. The action looks new (bolt face, firing pin, smooth cycling), anything I should look for especially carefully?

If the last three digits on the bolt match the serial number on the receiver and the bore is clear with no deep pitting and the action works ok then it should be safe to fire. The Japanese actions are very strong actions. It look's like a pretty nice rifle.

You have what we call a no-series Nagoya. Your rifle was made about halfway through the original series of 100K rifles. One characteristic of these early rifles is the rear swivel that your rifle has. It was designed to accept the snap clip of a quick disconnect sling. As far as shooting it - go for it. That rifle is as good as it gets for that.
Nice to see that some families do hang onto their heritage!

Guess I'll clean her up and order some ammo! Any idea of the value? I do NOT want to sell it, just curious....

Thanks!

On value, not too much as it's missing all the "goodies" except for the AA sights and is ground. Still, the stock would be quite valuable to a parts guy. I'd say in the $250 range.
This is what the sling looks like in case you ever run across one. (Just to make Big Ed drool ;))

There's a gun show in Louisville the 13-14th, I'll be on the lookout for a sling, but I probably won't buy as I'm ignorant enough to be duped. :(

I've already emailed Mr Nambu, I'll be ordering next week! I'm thinking 100 or so rounds... what's the recoil like? 30-30ish?

On the sling, yes be careful; you can pay $100 to $300 for an original.

Or $40 for a repro.

Very nice rifle, and bayonet. The bore and bolt face are chrome lined, something years ahead of it's time. The recoil would be like a 30-30 of the same barrel length. I think it's alot like an Enfield No4 MkI.
