So I finally took my PSL out for some fun at my buddies range. Time was limited as was my ammo count so I was only able to fire approx 30 rounds. Now I'm a big tall lanky guy at 6'4" and 240 lbs. I actually found the stock and scope to be perfect for me and had no problems with it at all. Now I did add the buttstock pad that adds approx. an inch so that could be a factor. Recoil was nothing what I thought it would be and felt like I was shooting a .223 or 30-30.
Using my 4x24 LPS TIP2 scope I was able to get decent grouping at approx 75 yards. I'm not the best shot in the world but I was able to get 1" groups with a 25 mph crosswind. Sorry no pics. I did have quite the problem with my magazine and extracting rounds. Starting off I tried a full magazine but the rifle would not chamber a round. Ok, lets take out all but two and try that. Bingo. Round chambered with no problems. Did this with two rounds mags for awhile and worked my way up to five rounds in the mag. Seemed the mag needed a little use before she was broken in. Now the extracting problem. I had about 1 in 3 rounds either fail to properly be ejected or stovepipe. At the beginning it was much worse but I began to get around the 20 mark it began ejecting properly more often. When I ended shooting it had actually properly ejected the last few rounds with no problem. Overall I was happy with the rifle and thought began that maybe I hadn't cleaned her as well as I should have or that maybe just getting a couple dozen rounds through her would do the trick. The next day would be my test as I was taking her hog hunting.
Heading out early the next morning I was very nervous about the extracting problem and if it would occur in the heat of the hunt. These pigs we were hunting had to be almost stepped on to move so multiple shots and within 25 yards would be required to take down one or more pigs on the run. Now we had only one chance during the entire day but the PSL excelled when the time came. My buddy (who had a thermal scope and AR-10) and I jumped a couple in some thick brush. Three popped not not twenty yards from both of us and the shoot was on. With the LPS scope I was able to pick up my target quickly and pumped out the first two rounds. I then scanned left and found my second target and fired my third and last round before the pigs made it into the brush. Two of my PPU 7.72x54R rounds found their mark and two hogs were left dead on the ground, both within seconds of each other. Between the first and last shot was maybe no more than three seconds and the PSL came through with flying colors. Sadly my buddies gorgeous AR-10 jammed extracting is first round and he came away empty handed. Such irony!
To make things short and sweet I love my PSL. I was very nervous when I first got her due to the craftsmanship quality differences in her and my usual AR-10 and Remingtons but when it came down to the nitty-gritty she held her own. She is now my hog gun when it comes to the shots less than 100 yards and my AR-10 with be my distance rifle for those pesky deer in the mountains.
Nikita and me on Friday's hunt.
