It came today and took around 30 minutes to unpack it. It looks like a keeper. The finish on the stock is a bit thin and may have been cleaned at some point but definitely not sanded. The main part of the stock is numbered 455 as it should be but the handguard is 433. Everything else, including the floor plate matches. The number on the base of the scope is hard to read but looks like 6986. Unfortunately, the worst paint chippage on the scope is where the maker's mark and number are. I can make out 640 but that's about it for that number. The optics are clear but there are some specks visible

Thanks all. The description stated the optics were cloudy. They look pretty clear to me but slightly out of focus & with a few specks. The condition is pretty darn good over all with some tarnishing of the bolt and the straw parts.

BTW, the barrel saddle is missing. Frank, would this use the solid one or the folded one? I'll have to see about finding a replacement for it.

nice rig Rob. I'm still in need of a Type 97 scope for my excellent Kokura 97. i have been on the line for a couple of them but a fellow board member always seems to swoop in on them and snatch them away. he must have 20 scopes by now.

If it's who I'm thinking of, I believe he swooped in and bought the scope you were going to sell me. I snooze I lose.

Nice sniper a-dogs!

Hi Rob :

The " barrel saddle " is the machined version.
Regarding the scope it is a Nippon Typewriter Co. "Kogaku". Now that company had the following production ranges : 9600 to 9999 ( 9638 - 9808 thus far ) , 14150 to 14250 ( 14208 - 14224 thus far ), 18600 to 20000 ( 18950 - 20000 thus far ) , 26400 to 27200 ( 26475 - 27147 thus far ) .
John "byf45" B. has been able to decipher the serial number with a 20x eye loop, good lighting, and knowing what to expect such as four or five digit. Well we now know it was issued to Kokura 97 rifle # 6986.

t94nambu have you sent me the data on your excellent Kokura 97 ?, the only number I have for you is Kokura 97 # 7618. Please send data to : < [email protected] > .

Thanks Yoda, I'll look for a machined barrel saddle. I'll give the scope a looksee in the daylight tomorrow but it appears that much of the number was in the paint that's now gone and there is just a faint trace of it in the metal. I have a 10X and a 20X loupe so I'll check it out.

Dawgs, great score !
The scope maker name is NTC, and not "Kogaku", as Kogaku just means the word optics, another common collector misnomer.
Mucho Thanky Okiedokie! I'll see if I can clean that rusty area on the scope a little bit today and get a better read on the number.
The condition of this rifle is pretty amazing and it's nice that the mum wasn't ground but was struck with four small lines. The floor plate area still has nice bluing and even the butt plate has lots of original blue remaining.

Was finally able to make out the number on the scope tube and it's 9646.

Took these quick shots of other markings on the scope.
