So I've been waiting for for my license for about five or six weeks now but I got it on thursday and today she arrived, my "new" 246!
I bought her unseen so I've been a bit nervous about what the seller considers "good" condition, but there were no need to worry.

She *is* in good condition with a few small marks in the stock to let you know she hasn't been sitting in a closet all of the +66 years she's been around. The blueing is *very* nice with only a couple of small scratches that you wouldn't notice unless you were looking for them.
The only real fault (which I knew about anyway) is that some unholy bastard has drilled holes for mounting a scope on her and I'll have to see how I'll deal with that because I want to use the iron sights.

As I'm sure you already know, only 227 of these were manufactured between 1937-1941 but I don't know exactly how old mine is. I'm hoping Pettson might be able to tell me that, her number is N52x.

As you can see on the photo there's no bolt (I guess it'll come tomorrow.) but I had to take a photo to show her off :D

I suggest putting some plug screws into the holes and not worrying about it. There may come a time when a low powered scope might be of some use. In my youth I had fabulous eye sight. Not so now which makes many of my favorite rifles hard to use unless the conditions are just right. ~Andy

I believe the 246 was made 1939-41. They had their own unique serial number series and I would guess yours is an early production rifle, probably made in 1939. They are slick rifles - congratulations for the find!

Hej L Speed,

The 246 was a limited run of FN 98 action rifles with the special steel barrels, which for the life of me, I forget - I think the nickel steel barrel and were chambered for 9.3x62. I've seen two and let one get away from which I will regret forever. Although not 100% HVA with the FN action, the two I've seen seemed to have really nice wood and metal finishing.

Thanks for the info.

Yes, that would be a catch.

With the 98 action, a x62 would be of the "long" persuasion, too, not the "x62 Short" of 96 fame.

Yes, I guess the 246 is sort of a "best gun" version of the 146.
It has a nickel steel barrel, nicer wood and is chambered for 9,3x62.

I'm going to talk to a gunsmith about getting some headless screws to fill the holes and repair a small patch of damaged blueing under the screwed on rail.

I got the bolt today, so here's a new photo :D

Fredrik:

That really is a nice-looking rifle!

I have seen some patch-jobs on screw holes that really blended in very well, covered them up and made for a very nice repair, so I think you have a great idea for them.

Where do you live? That is, what country?

Pettson tells us that Swedes like modern guns these days. I think you should send it to one of us so that you can go get a new super short boomer clanger with polymer stock and paint on metal finish.;)

filling screw holes

Not to tout another website, but I remember reading a post by 'triggerguard1' on 24hour Campfire about filling screw holes with soft or untreated screws. It seemed to work very well and they took bluing very well also. Might try a search over there in the gunsmithing section.

Pettson, Steve,
Went to our local gunshow this weekend, and I saw what I believe being a 246.

The s//n of this rifle was N1173, so does all the "N" series are fitted with the nickel alloy barrel? Did I miss it?

Also, there was at least one 1640 action wich was not drilled and tapped for Weaver mounts, only for a side mount... was this common as per I never saw any before?... (or did not remark it...)
